What to Expect

At Unity Academy we have the privilege of developing a new love of learning in children who have become disaffected by school for a number of reasons.  We take pride in celebrating the successes of all the children who attend our school and embrace everyone’s unique qualities to promote a sense of achievement and positive attitude to tackle every challenge, no matter how small.

We currently have 6 classes within our setting, starting from Foundation Stage up to Year 6.  These classes have places for no more than 8 children at a time supported by at least 2 members of staff, to include a teacher and support.  These classes are made up of children of varying ages, dependent on their individual need and social awareness.  Children are supported as necessary by staff, through quality first teaching and adapted resources.  However we also promote and encourage children to be as independent as possible in readiness for later life.

Our school day starts at 9.00am where children are greeted each morning by staff as they head to their classes.  The first activity of the day is the daily mile where all children and staff have the opportunity to meet up with their friends and burn off a bit of energy before rejoining their classes for toast and circle time before more formal lessons begin.  Children follow a structured timetable each day following a varied curriculum to include English, Maths and Science alongside topic based activities focusing on history and geography.  Further details can be found on our website in curriculum.

We have 2 assemblies a week where all the children come together to celebrate successes and learn about our values through stories and singing.  The first assembly of the week looks at the specific value for that half term so children have a better understanding of how this value relates specifically to them.  The second assembly is our achievement assembly where a child from each class is nominated for an award by their class teacher.  Other achievements are also celebrated such as Forest School, Headteacher’s Award, Playground achievement, etc. As a school we feel it is important for all children to feel that they belong and that their achievements are recognised.

Enrichment plays an incredibly important role within our setting.  Every day there are opportunities to promote this and all children actively take part in a variety of activities to include music, gymnastics, nurture, forest school, outdoor learning, playground activities, social skills, bikes and scooters and mindfulness.

At the end of every day each class nominates a child to receive the title of Star of the Day.  Each child votes for one of their class members who has shown resilience and perseverance throughout the day, giving valid reasons for their choice. The child with the most votes wins and receives a prize and has their name put up within the classroom to celebrate.
