Phonics
At Unity Academy, we recognise that every child learns differently and may be at a different stage in their reading journey. We use the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, a structured, inclusive and engaging approach that enables children to experience success and build confidence as readers.
Read Write Inc. provides children with the essential skills they need to become accurate, fluent readers. Through carefully sequenced teaching, consistent routines and plenty of opportunities for practice and repetition, pupils learn to recognise sounds, blend them to read words and develop a growing understanding of what they read.
Our staff build positive relationships with pupils and create a supportive learning environment where children feel safe to take risks, celebrate progress and develop a love of reading. We believe that every child can become a successful reader, and we work hard to ensure that all pupils receive the support and challenge they need to achieve their potential.
How We Teach Phonics:
Children begin learning phonics as soon as they start school. They are taught to:
-
Recognise and say the sounds represented by letters.
-
Blend sounds together to read words.
-
Segment words into sounds to support spelling.
-
Read common exception words.
-
Develop reading fluency and comprehension skills.
Daily phonics lessons are carefully planned and delivered by trained staff to ensure every child makes strong progress.
Reading Practice:
Children take part in regular Read Write Inc. reading sessions where they:
-
Read books closely matched to their phonics knowledge.
-
Practise reading with increasing fluency and expression.
-
Develop their understanding through discussion and questioning.
Children will take books home to share and enjoy with their families. Re-reading familiar books helps to build confidence, accuracy and fluency.
Supporting Your Child at Home:
Parents and carers play a vital role in helping children become successful readers. You can support your child by:
-
Reading together every day.
-
Practising the sounds and words sent home from school.
-
Encouraging your child to talk about the books they read.
-
Celebrating their efforts and achievements.
Even a few minutes of daily reading practice can make a significant difference to your child's progress.
